Data Type:Administrative
The dwelling stock estimate for each year is equal to the previous year's dwelling stock estimate plus the latest annual net supply of housing figure. It is broken down into the 4 tenures: owner-occupied, private rented sector, local authority housing and housing association although it is not possible to split the private housing stock into owner-occupied and private rented sector at the local authority district level. Vacant dwellings also obtained from this statistical release (no specific separate release of their own)
Durations available vary between variables. Local Authority Dwelling Stock in England is provided 1994-2014 but other variables, e.g. net additions to housing stock, are provided on different timescales (in this case 2004-2015)
This dataset covers all local authorities in England. Certain regional aggregations of data were provided up until 2011 but these are no longer updated.
Estimates for total stock are derived from the Census for those years in which a Census was undertaken. In between census years, the total figures are produced by adding the annual net supply of housing to the existing dwelling stock
Live tables are freely available on the DCLG website
Government attitudes to research use of their data appear favourable.
Coverage: England
Units: Local authority
Some measures aggregated to larger scales are also provided
