Data Type:Administrative
This dataset contains data on housing starts and completions across the UK, disaggregated by tenure at different geographies. Compiled from returns by local authorities to the relevant national government/agency (DCLG, Scottish Government, NISRA) so precise details vary. Questions about robustness of NI completions data. Scottish and NI data available from separate websites.
Live tables provide data aggregated to the UK from 1999. Data aggregated to devolved nations are available over different timescales with Scotland for instance available from 2003 and England available from 2004. Data provided at the local authority level are provided quarterly from 2005. From 2012, data aggregated to the LEP level are also provided.
Quarterly figures are seasonally-adjusted whereas annual figures give actual figures for house building over 12 months and can thus be compared. House building statistics are collected at the LA level but it is important to be aware that housebuilding is clustered geographically and temporally. the precise timing with which starts and completions are recorded in the statistics can vary from one housing development to the next, depending on factors such as the timing of building control inspections or differences between data providers' administrative systems
Freely accessible live tables are provided on the DCLG website
Government attitudes to research use of their data appear favourable
