The stock of housing equity is the amount of wealth tied up in housing which does not have any loans secured on it. Housing Equity Withdrawal (HEW) is defined as the 'balance of effects' on the stock of housing equity from: Changes in the stock of secured lending when households take out loans or repay debt; Changes in the stock of housing wealth, e.g. when new properties are built or improvements are made to existing properties. HEW is the net effect of the different ways in which individual households might inject or withdraw housing equity.
